A Real World Introduction

Brief History

The Lakeland Terrier is an English breed that originated in the Lake District as far back as the 1800s. The breed was originally developed by farmers to go to ground after foxes in order to protect their herds of sheep during lambing season. The Lakeland Terrier is related to several terrier breeds and is one of the oldest working terriers still in use today. The Lakeland Terrier descended from a number of terrier breeds including the now extinct Old English Black and Tan terrier, the early Dandie Dinmont Terrier, the Bedlington Terrier and the Border Terrier.

Temperament

The Lakeland Terrier is a robust, hardy and healthy dog. They are confident and friendly but with a quiet disposition; good with people and children in so many ways, they make the ideal family pet. The breed is best suited to an active lifestyle, as they love to run and play ball games. The Lakeland Terrier can walk all day but they are an adaptable little breed; and on a day where the weather is bad, they are very content to curl up on their owners lap.

Today

The Lakeland Terrier is a fairly popular companion dog in the UK today; making an ideal family pet. Despite their independent nature, they are less common in the USA. This breed does not shed its coat, and consequently is considered better for some allergy sufferers. The breed is also still in use as a working terrier.

Lakeland Terriers on Showdog

Lakeland Terriers are currently ranked #87 on the breed list with four ranked kennels and only nine listed kennels overall.

Lakeland Terriers have a few dedicated breeders; including Silverlake and Everdale Goldens.

Silverlake is at present the #1 Lakeland Terrier Kennel and has bred forty-seven champions so far. Everdale Goldens is currently the #2 ranked kennel and has bred forty-four champions to date.

Here is what they have to say:

1. SOP

Sivlerlake: The current highest SOP is a male 84.50: www.showdog.com/users/dog_info.aspx?id=11696681

Everdale Goldens: SOP ranges from around 80 & up. I have a few broodies that are in the 80's. Most dogs in the show ring are 82 & up. Current top SOP is 84.50 but there aren't very many dogs above 84 SOP.

2. Availability

Silverlake: Lakeland Terrier are permanently available - ranging from SOP 80+ to 82+. In case somebody wants a showable dog or bitch all breeders are willing to let some.

Everdale Goldens: I ALWAYS seem to have at least one Lakeland up for sale. Currently I also have a bunch of brood bitches available. If anyone is interested in joining, they can always PM me or Silverlake and we would be more than happy to help them get started with some great dogs!

3. Friendly Breeders

Silverlake: All breeders are friendly and willing to help. Currently we have four permanent breeders.

Everdale Goldens: The breeders are extremely friendly and willing to help new people. That is the one thing that attracted me to this breed in the first place. Everyone works together and helps each other out. Dog sales are always $100 and all studs are $50. Unfortunately our breed forum isn't very active, but we really don't have that many breeders. Maybe we could increase the activity with some new breeders.

4. Competition and Finishing

Silverlake: Competition: In smaller shows group placements are possible - they are in a very strong group with AmStaffs, Sealyhams and Airedales! Finishing will be possible within thirty days - we help each other in case there are not enough entries.

Everdale Goldens: Lakelands are a very fun breed to show. Most of us enjoy showing under the owner handler judges, and you will often see majors in those shows. They don't take too long to session, especially for a terrier. If you start at day one, you should be able to have everything at 20 but show obedience before fourteen days old. Show obedience does take a little while to get to 20 but you can show them at 19.

5. Colours

Sivlerlake: There are ten colors - the highest SOP Colors are Black and Tan, Grizzle and Tan, Red Grizzle, Wheaten and Red. Liver & Tan follows with an average SOP 81.50

Currently there is one breeder with a color project - it's Linsey1997: www.showdog.com/general/user_information.aspx?user=Linsey1997

Mostly she is working on Black and Blue. In the past, I had a color project too, but only kept Wheaten and Red - finished this successfully. Because with the other colors, the progress was so slow, I got tired.

Everdale Goldens: There are ten total colors for Lakelands. I only have three different colors currently in my kennel, but I'm not doing any color breeding or anything. The most popular colors are Black & Tan, Grizzle & Tan, and Wheaten. Silverlake has several Reds and Liver & Tans. Not sure if there are any Blue or Blue & Tan out there. If someone is interested in color breeding, they definitely could have a lot of fun with this breed.

6. Traits

Silverlake: The traits are reasonable - it's common what judges like or not - I prefer the old Ratings to see how much 9.8 - 10.0 available, try not to breed dogs with 9.7 or 10.3 - only in exceptions. After the new ratings it would be hard - the destination of course is 10.0 new ratings!

Everdale Goldens: The most important traits for the Lakeland Terrier are the head and coat. A lot of Lakelands have a strong head and gait. I am not personally working on trait breeding, but a lot of my dogs have a strong gait.

Final Thoughts

Sivlerlake: We would wish us two or three more breeders keeping the breed - for my taste it would be perfect. E. g. I gave up some breeds because I hate it when too many players have them! Shows and handlers are easy to get. There is no player having the Monopol - means multiple kennels with the same breed - only selling bad dogs or extraordinary stud fees for a top SOP dog. Stud fee is 50 dollars - for color projects 25 dollars.

Everdale Goldens: I hope that people will consider joining Lakeland Terriers! We are all very friendly and would love to have some more breeders. Please feel free to contact me, and I will help you get started. Thank you!

Thank you to Silverlake and Everdale Goldens for taking the time to be interviewed, and if you would like to know more about the Lakeland Terrier, then the advice is to contact one of the breeders and they will be happy to get you started.

If you would like to nominate a breed to be featured as a future ‘Breed in the Spotlight,’ please post in the thread in the SD Fever Forum or PM Cristalina Pyrshep.
